Day 1 – Guwahati to Dirang
We begin our journey from Guwahati in the morning, watching the landscapes change almost seamlessly as the plains of Assam give way to the rugged mountains of Arunachal Pradesh. The drive itself is an experience, with every turn revealing deeper valleys, denser forests, rushing rivers, and increasingly dramatic Himalayan scenery.
En route, we stop at the beautiful Gyuto Monastery (if traveling via the OKSRT road) and spend some time exploring its peaceful surroundings. Later, we break for lunch at a small Tibetan settlement before continuing our journey to Dirang.

Day 2 – Dirang to Tawang
Today, we make our way to Tawang. Along the route, we stop at the Nyukmadung War Memorial to pay our respects to the fallen soldiers. We then continue towards the mighty Sela Pass, where breathtaking mountain views await.
We visit the war memorial at Sela Pass before warming ourselves with a cup of piping hot tea at the Army canteen. If time permits, we also take a short stroll along the beautiful Sela Lake before continuing to the magnificent Nuranang Waterfall, whose sheer scale is sure to leave you awestruck.

By late evening, we arrive at our homestay in Tawang and call it a day.
Day 3 – Tawang Local Tour
We begin the day with a visit to the magnificent Tawang Monastery, one of the largest monasteries in the world. After exploring the monastery at a relaxed pace, we visit Urgeling Monastery, the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama, followed by Ani Gompa. In the evening, we visit the Tawang War Memorial and experience its moving light and sound show.
Day 4 – Tawang – Penga Teng Tso – Shungatser Lake – Bum La
We start early today to explore the beautiful high-altitude lakes and valleys of the region. Our first stop is the serene Penga Teng Tso. The drive takes us through what was once a battlefield, where remnants of history can still be seen scattered across the landscape. From there, we continue to the uniquely beautiful Shungatser Lake, also known as Madhuri Lake after the Bollywood film Koyla.
Finally, we head towards Bum La on the India-China border, where we spend some time before beginning our return journey to Tawang.
Day 5 – Tawang to Zemithang [Going around Zemithang]
Today, we travel to the border village of Zemithang. This tiny Monpa village is a wonderful destination for landscape and portrait photography. Since very few tourists venture this far, the village remains largely untouched, offering a rare opportunity to experience the region’s traditional tribal way of life.
During our time here, we visit some of the area’s significant attractions, including the historic Gorsam Stupa, believed to have been constructed during the early 12th century. Throughout the drive, you’re treated to stunning mountain vistas in every direction.
Day 6 – Zemithang – Dirang
Today, we retrace our route back to Dirang. After bidding farewell to your hosts in Zemithang, we begin our return journey, making as many photo stops as you wish along the way. As the road winds through the mountains, keep an eye out for the rare black-necked crane, a remarkable bird species found in this region.
Day 7 – Dirang – Sangti Valley – Mandala Top – Bomdila
Today, we explore some of the lesser-visited corners of West Kameng Valley. We begin with a visit to TDL Monastery, also known as Dirang Monastery. If time permits, we also stop at the nearby hot water spring before heading towards the Mandala region.
The drive to Mandala Top is one of the most scenic in West Kameng, taking you through beautiful valleys and ever-changing mountain landscapes. At the summit, explore the famous 108 Manes and, if you’re fortunate, you may even spot the Brokpas, the nomadic yak herders of the region.
From Mandala, we descend into the beautiful Sangti Valley, where the river, rolling meadows, traditional houses, and ancient stupas create a timeless atmosphere. Sangti is also home to a sheep farm which, if open, makes for an interesting visit.
After exploring the valley, we continue to Bomdila, the charming hill town you crossed on your journey to Tawang. If time allows, visit Bomdila Monastery and soak in its peaceful ambience before checking into a welcoming homestay for the night.
Day 8 – Bomdila To Guwahati
We wake up early today to revisit the monastery, this time while the monks are immersed in their morning prayers. After a hearty breakfast, we begin our drive back to Guwahati, bringing this memorable journey through Arunachal Pradesh to a close.
