Detailed Arunachal Pradesh Tour Tribal Itinerary
Day 01: Guwahati – Dirang [Approx. drive time: 7–8 hrs | Approx. distance: 320 km]
Once you land in Guwahati, you will be received by our representative, who will help you settle into your steed for your Arunachal Pradesh road trip ahead. As we leave the outskirts of Guwahati and drive through scenic hills and river valleys of Arunachal Pradesh, you will notice the terrain and the temperature change quickly. With a lunch break and numerous photo breaks, by evening, you should reach Dirang, a quaint hill town known for its cool climate and natural beauty.
Day 02: Dirang Local exploration
Dirang is not just a transit stopover on a Tawang road trip. Dirang and the surrounding areas make for more than a destination, requiring dedicated time for themselves. Today would be a slow-paced day exploring the picturesque Sangti Valley, Mandala Top, and other places to see in Dirang. We will also spend time visiting the Dirang Monastery and enjoying local cafes or hot springs, or just spend time sitting by the river that divides the town into 2. All in all, a perfect for acclimatizing before heading further into the mountains.
Day 03: Dirang – Tawang [Approx. drive time: 5–6 hrs | Approx. distance: 140 km]
Today is going to be one of the most exciting days of this Tawang trip so far. We will drive to Tawang via the stunning Sela Pass. En route, we will stop for mountain views and the Jaswantgarh War Memorial. Time-permitting, we will also stop by the gorgeous Nuranang waterfall, also known as the Jang falls.
We arrive in Tawang by evening.
Day 04: Tawang Local
One more acclimatizing day today. At about 10,000 ft ASL, the air is rarified, so we must give our bodies time to get used to the high altitude and lack of Oxygen. We will take it slow today as we visit the iconic Tawang Monastery, explore the Tawang War Memorial, and take it easy strolling around the vibrant local market. We will also visit the culturally important Urgelling Monastery, which is also known as the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama.
Day 05: Tawang – Bum La – Tawang [Approx. drive time: 5–6 hrs round trip | Approx. distance: 90 km round trip]
Today is going to be yet another exciting day, in fact, one of the most exciting so far. We leave early on a local SUV today and almost immediately start ascending, leaving the beautiful town of Tawang behind.
A half-day excursion to Bum La Pass, close to the Indo-China border (permit required). Visit high-altitude lakes en route. The entire drive to and back from Bum La is beautiful beyond words and very emotionally evocative. On your way up to Bum La (or on your way down), you will also visit the gorgeous Sangestar Lake and the Penga Teng Tso (PT Tso). You will be back in Tawang by late afternoon.
Evening free in Tawang town.
Day 06: Tawang – Bomdila [Approx. drive time: 6–7 hrs | Approx. distance: 180 km]
Today, we start our return journey from Tawang, marking the start of the end of the Tawang leg of this grand Arunachal Pradesh tour. We drive back south to Bomdila, retracing the same route we had taken on our way up to Tawang. We will stop at the mighty Jang Falls, if we haven’t visited it while coming to Tawang. Crossing Dirang, we reach Bomdila, a small hill town known for its views and monastery, by early evening.
Once in Bomdila, the Bomdila monastery is a must-visit place, so that’s what we will do. We will pay a visit to the beautiful monastery campus before heading back to our stay.
Day 07: Bomdila – Itanagar [Approx. drive time: 8–9 hrs | Approx. distance: 270 km]
Today is going to be one of the longest days of this Tawang tour. A long scenic drive through valleys and forested roads will take us to Arunachal Pradesh’s capital, Itanagar. Check in to your stay and settle down for the night. Time-permitting, you can also head out for a walk around your place of stay, if you feel like.
Day 08: Itanagar – Ziro Valley [Approx. drive time: 4–5 hrs | Approx. distance: 115 km]
After a long day yesterday, we can take it easy today. We start at ease after breakfast and first visit the Itanagar gompa. Situated at the heart of Itanagar town, this Buddhist monastery is a very calm and soothing place offering a nice bird’s eye view of the town. From there, we head to the ruins of the Ita fort and spend some time there.
Once done with the ruins of the Ita fort, we will start our drive to the picturesque Ziro Valley, known for its green rice fields and Apatani tribal culture.
We arrive in the afternoon. Evening is free to relax.
Day 09: Ziro Valley Guided Tour
While you would have gotten a glimpse of the Ziro Valley yesterday, on your way here, today is the day when we really get to know this unique region of Arunachal Pradesh. One that is so rich in its tribal traditions and way of life, it has already found its way to the UNESCO World Heritage Site’s tentative list.
