Grab your quick breakfast before starting your drive through the plains of Assam dotted by random, small towns all along, to the Kaziranga National Park. If your arrival is early in the morning, your drive from Guwahati to Kaziranga National Park will be done just in time for you to catch your Kaziranga Jeep safari.
Day 2 – Kaziranga – Shillong
In the morning, start early and head straight to the Kaziranga elephant safari entry point. The safari will last for around one hour during which you will experience Kaziranga wildlife from very close quarters—sometimes, standing literally next to the famous one-horned rhinos of Kaziranga. Later in the morning, you will head to the jungle again for your Jeep safari (if you haven’t done it yesterday). Then, you hop on to your vehicle and start for Meghalaya, the abode of clouds. On your way to Shillong, stop by the gorgeous Umiam Lake and soak in its grandeur. Call it a day and relax at your beautiful Khasi homestay in Shillong.
Day 3 – Shillong – Cherrapunjee (Sohra)
- Elephant falls.
- Shillong Peak.
- Mawkdok Viewpoint.
- Wah Kaba Falls.
- Arwah Caves.
- Nonkalikhai Falls.
- Mawsmai Caves.
**November – February is dry season so waterfalls are not generally at their best.
Day 4 – Cherrapunjee to Mawlynnong
Start your day by filling your lungs with fresh Cherrapunjee air. If you manage to wake up early, do not miss taking a walk around the village in your homestay’s locality. After breakfast at your homestay, start your drive from Cherrapunjee to Mawlynnong, Asia’s cleanest village. It is a beautiful drive through the countryside of Meghalaya so, sit back and relax and enjoy the drive. Feel free to stop as you please and soak in the beautiful surroundings. Once in Mawlynnong, walk up the sky bridge to have a look at the Bangladesh plains below. Check in to a very simple but nice village home for the night and have your dinner there.
Also, on your way, stop by the village of Riwai and visit the Living Root Bridge there.
Day 5 – Mawlynnong – Dawki – Guwahati
Wake – up to yet another fresh morning in the laps of nature and head out for a stroll around the village. Explore its hundred-year-old church, and the narrow lanes of the village, and learn about how the village is kept spotlessly clean by watching the villagers, kids to oldies, playing their part in keeping the village clean. Post breakfast, head back to Dawki and Tamabil. It is famous for the transparent waters of the Umgkot River. Enjoy a boat ride on the river (not included) and go up to the zero point where India meets Bangladesh. After the boat ride, it’s a long drive back to the plains of Assam.
You stay in Guwahati for the night, at an Assamese heritage home/an Assamese homestay/hotel.
Day 6 – Guwahati to Dirang
We start early from Guwahati as it is a long drive from the plains of Assam to the high Arunachal Pradesh. The driver from Guwahati to Dirang takes you through the golden paddy fields of Assam and numerous small towns and villages of countryside Assam. Soon after entering Arunachal Pradesh and a short lunch break, we stop by the beautiful Gyuto monastery and spend some time exploring it. From there, we resume our drive to the gorgeous Dirang Valley. For the night, we stay at a lovely tribal homestay overlooking the Dirang Valley.
Day 7 – Dirang to Tawang
Today is going to be one of the most exciting days of the trip. You will be crossing the mighty Sela Pass on your way to Tawang. Not to mention the numerous war memorials that you will be visiting on the way. Visit & pay your respect to the fallen heroes of our country before heading ahead and gawking at the beauty of the mesmerizing Sela Lake. If you are visiting during the white season (read snow), you will find the lake beautifully frozen. Take a stroll by the lovely Sela Lake if time permits and then start for our next stop, the Nuranang waterfall, the sheer grandness of which is sure to make your jaws drop. From there, we head straight to Tawang where your super welcoming hosts will be expecting you.
Day 8 – Tawang Tour
Today is a relaxed day so start it at your own pace, after a lazy breakfast. You will be first visiting the largest monastery in the world, the Tawang Monastery, and explore the place as you like. Once you are done here, your driver will take you to the Urgeling monastery, the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama, and then the Ani Gompa (time permitting). You can have your lunch in the market or you can come back to your homestay for your lunch and a quick nap. In the evening, we visit the war memorial and experience the light and sound show there.
Day 9 – Penga Teng Tso, Madhuri Lake, and Bum La
Today again is one of the most exciting days of your trip. You will first drive to the India – China border at Bum La and then take a diversion to visit the Sangestar Tso, also known as the Madhuri Lake of Koyla (the Bollywood movie) fame. The drive will be through what was once a battlefield. The scars of the war can be seen scattered all around in the form of abandoned Army bunkers. While Bum La & the Sangestar Lake themselves are beautiful, they are not the only highlight of the day.
The entire drive is gorgeous, to say the least, something that cannot be put to words.
Day 10 – Tawang to Bomdila/Dirang.
(Stay at the Bomdila Monastery rest-house depends upon availability and the monastery schedule. Else your stay will be at one of the few nice hotels in Bomdila or one of our homestays in Bomdila)
Day 11 – Bomdila/Dirang to Gauhati.
We wake up early today so that we can explore the monastery once again, this time while the monks are busy praying. After a hearty breakfast at the monastery, we start our return journey back to Guwahati which marks the end of this wonderful trip.
